Flesh and Blood is a game that transcends language and culture barriers.<\/p>

It is played all around the world, even where English is barely spoken! While exciting, this presents a different kind of challenge to judges. From the Pro Tour to a local game store\u2019s Armory with visiting foreign players: it is possible to be in a scenario where both players and the judge at the table might not share a common language!<\/p>

Hi, I am QJ Wong (L2) from Malaysia, and I\u2019ve been judging FAB since 2021. I\u2019ve also had a decade\u2019s experience judging at TCG events all around the world. I want to share with you my experience judging through language barriers. It can be tempting to get a judge call, be asked for a native speaker, and then just walk off. I would like to encourage you to take the call yourself for various reasons:<\/div>

  1. You\u2019ll help others reduce their workload.<\/li>
  2. It’ll be a valuable learning and experience gaining opportunity.<\/li>
  3. Players can receive assistance quicker.<\/li><\/ol><\/div>
    As for how, just like many things in life, first impressions are important.<\/div>
    \u00a0<\/div>
    Smile and make yourself friendly and approachable. Bend down or crouch to the players\u2019 eye-level, especially when dealing with younger players. You may choose to lead with a local greeting to make yourself more approachable, but do take care not to give the impression that you are able to speak that language.<\/div>

    If you encounter some hesitancy, encourage them with a \u201cLet\u2019s try simple English!\u201d<\/i> slowly and clearly.<\/p>
