Path Well Traveled: A London Travel Guide

Steve Broda, also known as Judge Broda, is a UK judge based in the heart of London.  Steve works with London and the surrounding stores to organise events, engage with the community and built the London discord for players to find out more about the game. Here, Steve will tell you some of the best places to visit to make your trip to London more memorable.  Whether it’s your first time or you’re a Rowdy Local, there should be something new for you to experience below!

Brit-Training!

This April 10th, you will learn how to butter your crumpets and pair the correct Tea’s with your hero choice (Rhinar goes well with an Earl Grey).

Whilst you enjoy your stay in the UK, you will have to learn a couple important rules.  Firstly, talking about the weather, repeat after me “Typical British weather!” and for added authenticity, put a tut sound after it. Perfect! But for now, let’s dig in deep to what you can do in London in and around the pro tour!

Venue

The ExCeL Centre in London is a massive events venue located in the heart of the Royal Docks, offering over 100,000 square meters of exhibition space. Known for hosting a wide range of international events, from trade shows and conferences to live entertainment and sporting competitions, the ExCeL is a hub for both business and leisure. Its sleek, modern architecture and proximity to London’s city center make it an accessible destination for visitors from around the world, ensuring that there’s always something exciting happening within its expansive halls.

Travelling

Excel uses DLR and the Elizabeth line.  A positive about London is that you can travel from anywhere to anywhere with ease. Every line in London will take you to a jubilee line, which once you are on, will take you to a connecting DLR line.

Need to plan your journey? Use Transport for London to help plan your journey.  The TFL website will help you move around London with ease and show you the best and fastest routes.

But what if you don’t want to travel around London looking at underground tunnels and people rushing to work? London has many tour bus companies, such as Tootbus and Goldentours, that will show you the sites of London for you to take pictures, recognize sites from the Flesh and Blood fan favourite film, Paddington Bear! (Turns out he’s a Terra main, who knew?)

Parks

London is home to some of the most beautiful and diverse parks, offering everything from lush green spaces for relaxation to vibrant gardens and even serene lakes. Here’s a roundup of the best parks to explore in the city:

Hyde Park
Hyde Park is London’s giant green playground, where you can pretend to be healthy while dodging joggers and pretending the pigeons aren’t eyeing your sandwich. You’ve got the Serpentine Lake, which is basically the central London version of a “serene getaway,” except you’re just a stone’s throw away from the madness of Oxford Street. And if you fancy a little intellectual debate, there’s Speaker’s Corner, where you can listen to a range of eccentric characters argue about everything from conspiracy theories to why squirrels are secretly in charge of the government.

Regent’s Park
Regent’s Park is the type of park where you can walk your dog in style (or just pretend you’re walking someone else’s dog for a bit of extra glam). With beautifully manicured gardens, it’s so picturesque, even the ducks look like they have their lives together. And let’s not forget London Zoo, where you can visit animals that are definitely better dressed than you, especially the flamingos, who seem to be perpetually in some kind of high-fashion runway competition.

St. James’s Park
St. James’s Park is so close to Buckingham Palace, you’ll practically trip over a royal if you’re not careful. It’s also home to pelicans, who are basically the park’s unofficial mascots. These majestic birds have been chilling here since the 17th century, probably plotting how to become influencers on Instagram. If you’re lucky, you might also spot a swan giving you the side-eye while pretending to be the King’s personal bodyguard.

And, my personal favourite:

Richmond Park
Richmond Park is for the nature lovers who also enjoy a healthy dose of majestic wildlife—mainly the deer who roam around like they own the place (spoiler alert: they do). It’s big enough to get lost in, but don’t worry, the deer will probably lead you to safety—or they’ll just stare at you while judging your lack of fitness. Either way, it’s a great place for a peaceful walk, a run, or an impromptu deer-sighting selfie.

Soho
Soho is London’s heart of excitement and diversity, packed with buzzing streets, quirky bars, and an endless array of restaurants. Known for its vibrant nightlife, Soho has something for everyone—whether you’re catching a late-night comedy show, sipping cocktails at a hidden speakeasy, or munching on mouth-watering street food. With its ever-changing mix of cool spots and lively energy, Soho is a place where you’ll always find something to keep you entertained and wanting more.

The British Museum
If you’ve ever wanted to stare at ancient Egyptian mummies and pretend you’re in an Indiana Jones movie, then the British Museum is your moment of glory. From the Rosetta Stone to Greek statues that make you feel inadequate about your own gym routine, this museum is a treasure trove of culture. It’s free, so it’s the perfect place to feel super sophisticated without spending a penny. Plus, who doesn’t love pretending to understand ancient history while secretly googling everything on your phone?

London Chinatown
London’s Chinatown is a lively, colorful corner of the city, where the streets are lined with neon lights, fragrant food stalls, and vibrant markets. Located in the heart of the West End, it’s a haven for anyone craving authentic Chinese cuisine, from steaming dim sum to mouth-watering Peking duck. The area is full of bustling restaurants, tea shops, and bakeries, offering a sensory overload of sights and smells. Get in early because Chinatown becomes a busy hub fast! With all the bao buns, boba tea, and bubble waffles, you’ll be too full to walk around by the time you’ve sampled everything. But fear not—it’s worth it! You’ll be leaving London after the pro tour with extra cards and calories, and maybe a few sweet treats to take home

Key Words and Phrases

“It’s not my cup of tea.” – Translation: “I don’t like it.” This phrase is the British way of politely rejecting something. It’s like saying, “I’m not really into that,” without being rude—because who would ever be rude about tea?

“He’s a right muppet.” – Translation: “He’s an idiot.” This one comes from the lovable Muppets, but in the UK, if you’re called a “muppet,” it’s definitely not a compliment. It’s like saying someone’s a bit of a lovable fool—but with extra judgment.

“A dog’s breakfast.” – Translation: “A complete mess.” When something’s a “dog’s breakfast,” it’s an utter disaster—just like the one you’d imagine your dog making if you left them alone with your breakfast.

Whether you’re a seasoned warrior or a newcomer, it’ll be an absolute pleasure to battle alongside you! May your decks be ever strong and your future draws ever better! Until next time, keep your cards close and your strategies closer. Safe travels, and see you at the next event!
